Cappadocia (Kapadokya) is one of the world's most unique landscapes — fairy chimneys (volcanic tuff towers shaped by erosion), entire towns and monasteries carved into rock, underground cities housing tens of thousands. The most famous Cappadocia activity. About 150 balloons take off at sunrise (5:00-7:00 AM depending on season), carrying 4000-5000 tourists daily in peak season. View: hundreds of balloons floating over fairy chimneys, Göreme valley, vineyards. Iconic Instagram shot.
- Price: 150-200 EUR per person (1 hour flight, hotel transfer included, champagne after).
- Booking: reserve 2-3 days in advance in low season, 1-2 weeks in summer.
- Operators: Royal, Kapadokya, Voyager (the regulated, safe ones).
- Weather: 30% of flights cancelled due to wind. Plan 2-3 day buffer.
- Best season: April-November. Winter possible but flights more cancelled.
🏛️ Göreme Open Air Museum
UNESCO. Complex of 30+ rock churches carved by Christian monks in the 4th-13th centuries. Best preserved frescoes: Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise — extra 50 TL to protect frescoes from light), Apple Church, Snake Church. Main museum entry: 200 TL.
🏠 Underground cities
Cappadocia has 36 underground cities, where Christians hid from Persian and Arab raids (7th-10th c.). Largest: Derinkuyu (8 levels, 60 m deep, housed 20,000 people), Kaymaklı (4 levels, similar size). Visit: 200 TL each. Claustrophobic in places.

- Rose Valley — pink rocks at sunset.
- Love Valley — phallic-shaped chimneys (yes, the name fits).
- Pigeon Valley — pigeon houses carved into walls, between Göreme and Uçhisar.
- Ihlara Valley — 14 km canyon with Byzantine churches.
- Devrent Valley — fantasy shapes (camel rock, etc).

Cappadocia's signature accommodation — rooms carved into rock, often hundreds of years old, restored with modern luxury. Best: Museum Hotel Uçhisar (luxury), Sultan Cave Suites (Instagram balcony view of balloons), Kelebek Special Cave Hotel (Göreme).
🚗 Transport
Nearest airports: Kayseri (ASR, 80 km) and Nevşehir (NAV, 40 km). Direct flights from Istanbul daily. Bus from Istanbul: 12 hours overnight.
