Pamukkale (literally "Cotton Castle") is one of Turkey's most distinctive natural sights — white travertine terraces formed over millennia by calcium-rich thermal waters. UNESCO World Heritage 1988 (combined with the ancient city of Hierapolis on the cliff above).
🏞️ White travertines
17 thermal springs, water temperature 35-100°C. Water rich in calcium carbonate flows down the cliff, depositing white calcium that hardens into travertine. Over 14,000 years this created stepped terraces filled with turquoise pools. White against blue sky — surreal landscape.
- Walk barefoot mandatory (to protect travertine from shoe damage).
- Only certain pools allow swimming — most travertines are now dry to preserve.
- Best photos: sunset (golden light on white).
- Avoid midday — white surface reflects sun aggressively.
🏛️ Hierapolis ancient city
Greco-Roman spa city founded 190 BC. Roman elite came here for thermal therapy. Apostle Philip was martyred here (martyrium ruins visible). UNESCO with Pamukkale. Highlights:
- Roman Theatre (2nd c. AD) — 12,000 seats, best preserved on Anatolian plateau.
- Necropolis — 1200+ tombs from Hellenistic to Byzantine era.
- Frontinus Gate — main entrance (84-86 AD).
- Plutonium — opening releasing CO2 gases, ancient priests claimed connection to Hades.
- Archaeological Museum — finds from excavations.
💧 Cleopatra Pool (Antique Pool)
Thermal pool inside Hierapolis (separate ticket 200 TL). Contains fallen ancient columns from an earthquake. Cleopatra is said to have bathed here (legend). Water 36°C, mineral-rich. Therapeutic for skin, rheumatism, circulation. Allow 1 hour swim + transport.

- Entry to Pamukkale + Hierapolis: 700 TL combo. Museum Pass accepted.
- Cleopatra Pool: 200 TL extra.
- Hours: 6:30-21:00 summer, 8:00-17:00 winter.
- Time needed: half day (4-5 hours) for everything.
- Best time: sunrise (no crowds, best photo) or late afternoon (sunset).
- Hot air balloon over Pamukkale — alternative to Cappadocia, less crowded, 100 EUR.

Denizli Airport (DNZ) 50 km, direct flights from Istanbul (1 hour). Buses from Antalya (4h), İzmir (4h), Bodrum (5h). Combo Pamukkale + Ephesus + Cappadocia is the classic Western Turkey route.
