Ephesus (Efes) is one of the largest and best preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean — UNESCO World Heritage 2015. Founded by Greek colonists in the 10th century BC, Ephesus reached its peak under Roman rule (1st-2nd c. AD) with 250,000 inhabitants — fourth largest city in the Roman Empire after Rome, Alexandria and Antioch.

📚 Library of Celsus

Ephesus's most iconic monument — facade of the library built in 117 AD by Tiberius Julius Aquila for his father, Roman consul Celsus. Held 12,000 papyrus scrolls. Today only the two-story facade remains (reconstructed 1970-1978), but it's stunning. The most photographed structure in Turkey after the Hagia Sophia.

🏛️ Great Theatre

Capacity 25,000 spectators, one of the largest in the ancient world. Excellent acoustics — still used for concerts (Diana Ross, Sting, Elton John have performed). Location of Apostle Paul's speech mentioned in the Bible (Acts 19), causing a riot of silversmiths.

🏘️ Terrace Houses

Roman luxury residences (1st-7th c. AD) on the hillside — mosaics, frescoes, marble. Separate entry (200 TL extra) but absolutely worth it — like a Roman Pompeii but in much better condition. Six houses with running water, central heating, private baths.

⛪ Temple of Artemis

One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. 4 times larger than the Parthenon in Athens, 127 columns. Destroyed and rebuilt three times, finally demolished by Goths in 268 AD. Today only one reconstructed column remains in a swampy meadow 3 km from Ephesus. Free entry, but mostly disappointing.

⛪ House of the Virgin Mary

7 km south of Ephesus, on Mount Bülbül. Stone house where the Virgin Mary is said to have spent her last years (Apostle John brought her here). Christian and Muslim pilgrimage site, visited by popes John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, Francis. Free entry.
