Mount Nemrut (Nemrut Dağı, 2150 m) is an extraordinary archaeological site in Turkey's Adıyaman province. UNESCO World Heritage 1987. Built by King Antiochus I of Commagene (69-34 BC) as his own cult sanctuary — royal tomb surrounded by giant statues of gods.

🏛️ History

The Kingdom of Commagene (162 BC - 72 AD) was a small buffer state between Rome and the Persian Empire. King Antiochus I established a cult combining Greek and Persian traditions. He declared himself equal to gods such as Zeus, Apollo, Herakles, Tyche and Ahuramazda. On the East and West terraces he had 8-9 metre tall statues built.

🗿 Giant statues

East Terrace and West Terrace — each with 5 giant seated figures and 2 animals (eagle and lion). Since the 1st century BC, earthquakes have separated the heads from the bodies. Today the head statues are lined up in front of the bodies — iconic photo subject. Each figure weighs a total of 50 tons.

🌅 Sunrise

Nemrut's most famous experience — sunrise on the East Terrace. Leave the hotel around 4:00 AM (in summer), climb for 30 minutes, take your place before daybreak. Sun rising behind the statues — legendary moment. Evening: sunset on the West Terrace (less crowded).

🚗 Transport

  • Adıyaman (75 km) — nearest provincial centre, airport (ADF, daily flight from Istanbul).
  • Kahta (40 km) — nearest town, preferred for overnight stay.
  • Tour companies organise from Kahta — sunrise tour 200 TL.
  • Rental car — good for freedom, asphalt road available.
